Without children's books, literary toddlers would be forced to tackle Camus or Sartre before their time, causing existential crises during recess and the rejection of never learning to color within the lines. Delight children without philosophical quandary with today's Groupon: for $900, you get a four-day children's picture-book workshop from Dr. Peter J. Shield. Dr. Peter J. Shield, author of Don Quixote and the Windmills, offers his tutelage during the following sessions: - May 8–May 11 (leave May 12 in the morning)
- May 15–May 18 (leave May 19 in the morning)
- May 22–May 25 (leave May 26 in the morning)
- June 5–June 8 (leave June 9 in the morning)
- June 12–June 15 (leave June 16 in the morning)
- June 19–June 22 (leave June 23 in the morning)
Aspiring writers attending the four-day retreat are walked through their own creative process, ending the session with a completed colorful children's picture book and camaraderie with up to 19 other book dreamers. While staying in a standard king or twin room in either Sam's Town Hotel, Eastside Cannery Hotel, Imperial Palace or Fiesta Henderson , depending on availability and workshop date, story weavers perform a series of photo shoots, first immortalizing the scenery of Mystic Falls Park, a fantastical indoor jungle, before creating memorable protagonists, moustache-twirling arch nemeses, and finally capturing imaginary friends in a character shoot. Dr. Shield debriefs students on the strategies of story-line composition as well as teaching them how to use Roxio Photo Suite 5, a photo-editing software with which they compile the disparate pieces to craft a completed children's book. Each participant should bring their own laptop, a digital camera with removable storage media, and a command of basic computer skills. To ameliorate the creative process, students are treated to a different Vegas show each session, the perfect opportunity to release creative tension and practice being spotted by adoring fans. A week after the workshop, participants receive a Kodak-printed full-colored proof of their breakout book ready to go to a publisher. Transportation to and from the airport and refreshments are also included. Read More Which fictional animal is single-handedly responsible for keeping the Internet from burning down? | | | |
